Not every pelvic floor needs strengthening. Weak pelvic floor muscles may benefit from carefully guided training, while a tense or overactive pelvic floor may first need relaxation. Pain during penetration, difficulty inserting a tampon or a feeling of constant tension can be reasons to seek professional advice before beginning Kegel exercises. A pelvic floor physiotherapist can help you understand which approach is appropriate for your body.

Kegel trainers and vaginal weights are designed to support awareness and controlled pelvic floor exercise. Beginner sets usually start with a lighter weight, allowing you to progress gradually as your control improves. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and stop if you experience pain, pressure or discomfort. Pelvic floor training should feel controlled rather than forced, and more exercise is not automatically better.

A tense pelvic floor can make penetration, sex or inserting a tampon feel uncomfortable. Soft massage tools, vibrating pelvic relaxation devices and graduated vaginal dilators can support slow exploration and help you become more aware of tension in your body. Use plenty of compatible lubricant, begin gently and never push through pain. Persistent discomfort should be discussed with a GP, gynaecologist or pelvic floor physiotherapist.
